I hope our host won't mind this thread but, as someone who has read about four of his books only, and who is inclined to read more, I'm curious how the readers here would rate Dan's books in terms of personal preference, with 1 being the most liked. (One can list more or list fewer than 10 of course.) I'm assuming that only a few people here would have read all of his books. Not sure anyone will respond, but that's OK.

I've read all of Dan's books and loved them all. MY favorite is THE FIFTH HEART.

I have read all of his novels and collections/stories and here is my Top 10 list of personal favorite novels:

CARRION COMFORT (1st Simmons books I read)
The HYPERION/ENDYMION books (all 4 taken as a whole)
SUMMER OF NIGHT
PHASES OF GRAVITY
THE HOLLOW MAN
THE TERROR
A WINTER HAUNTING
THE CROOK FACTORY
SONG OF KALI
ILIUM/OLYMPOS (both together)

A pretty good representation of all the different genres Dan has tackled over the years.

In my opinion, you must do this by genre.

This is tough. Kind of like ranking people.

I like SF, so Fall of Hyperion and the Illium/Olympus books rank very high. I really enjoyed the prose in the Fall of Hyperion and the imaginative story and construction of the latter books.

The Fifth Heart was a delight for its prose and construction.

I'm looking forwards to reading Omega Canyon.

But that's the problem with Dan's work. He has books that aren't easily classified that way. For example CARRION COMFORT, THE HOLLOW MAN & CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT could be listed as either horror or science fiction as they each contain both elements and more.

Iíve been remiss and not read them all yet, a deficiency I mean to remedy soon. But of the ones Iíve read:

Song of Kali ó my first, always have a soft spot for it
The Fifth Heart ó astonishing.
Drood ó I adore this book
Carrion Comfort ó my second and still terrific
The Terror
Phases of Gravity
Children of the Night
Flashback
Hard Case/Freeze/As Nails ó cheating to pile them together? Maybe. Itís my list.
Summer of Night
A Winter Haunting

This all just goes to show the silliness of list making, at least for me. I canít say theyíre really in order ó five of these could rotate into the top spot on any given day. And there are so many I havenít gotten to yet.

Iím with Mr Arkadin; Danís work is so consistently superb I really struggle to come up with a favorites list. I suppose my list would look a lot like Gregís, although I would add BLACK HILLS.

Oh, by the way, pardon me for going a bit off topic, but does this guy know how to end a book or what? CARRION COMFORT, DROOD, and especially THE CROOK FACTORY.....wow. Those last few lines stay in your head for a long, long time.
