This condescending piece makes me want to hit the guy just on general principles.

Hit the guy WITH a general principle.

The comments prove some humourous reading. The people with more than two brain cells banging together show up around comment ten, and really open up with both barrels on the article (Scott, you're not posting there yourself, are you?).

The author responds later in the thread with the hilarious:

So curious that you all showed up to comment at just about the same time. I wonder what caused that? You certainly couldn't possibly have an agenda here, could you, that transcends the science?

An agenda that transcends the science? Pot? Kettle?

Naw, it's something I'm not equipped to argue. All I know is that when a gun peddler barrels over the hill shouting that I'd better buy his guns NOW cause the Injuns are hot on his trail, I owe it to common sense to at least peek over the hill before I empty my wallet.

In other news (via wattsupwiththat.com), there is a proposal to change the FOIA laws in the US that would instruct Federal Agencies to lie to the public when a request involves national security or law enforcement.

This is important in the case of global warming because it is the belief of the Obama Administration that Global Warming is a matter of national security and they would likely fight the FOIAs on those grounds.

Here's another example of idiotarianism. This silly arseclown bases his entire argument upon the idea that the global warming exists, and then, without bothering to present any sort of backing argument, makes the leap to: "It is true that Muller made no attempt to ascertain "how much of the warming is due to humans." Still, the Berkeley group's work should help lead all but the dimmest policymakers to the overwhelmingly probable answer."

Really? This is like arguing that the moon shines at night, and possums only come out at night, so only the dimmest among us don't see the obvious causation by virtue of correlation. Clearly the shining of the moon is caused by possums.

Except of course that Robinson doesn't even bother attempting a correlation. Things are the way he says just because he says.

GOP Neo-Luddites Deny Climate Science
By Eugene Robinson
WASHINGTON -- For the clueless or cynical diehards who deny global warming, it's getting awfully cold out there.

The latest icy blast of reality comes from an eminent scientist whom the climate-change skeptics once lauded as one of their own. Richard Muller, a respected physicist at the University of California, Berkeley, used to dismiss alarmist climate research as being "polluted by political and activist frenzy." Frustrated at what he considered shoddy science, Muller launched his own comprehensive study to set the record straight. Instead, the record set him straight.

"Global warming is real," Muller wrote last week in The Wall Street Journal.

Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the neo-Luddites who are turning the GOP into the anti-science party should pay attention.

"When we began our study, we felt that skeptics had raised legitimate issues, and we didn't know what we'd find," Muller wrote. "Our results turned out to be close to those published by prior groups. We think that means that those groups had truly been careful in their work, despite their inability to convince some skeptics of that."

In other words, the deniers' claims about the alleged sloppiness or fraudulence of climate science are wrong. Muller's team, the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, rigorously explored the specific objections raised by skeptics -- and found them groundless.

Muller and his fellow researchers examined an enormous data set of observed temperatures from monitoring stations around the world and concluded that the average land temperature has risen 1 degree Centigrade -- or about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit -- since the mid-1950s.

This agrees with the increase estimated by the United Nations-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Muller's figures also conform with the estimates of those British and American researchers whose catty emails were the basis for the alleged "Climategate" scandal, which was never a scandal in the first place.

The Berkeley group's research even confirms the infamous "hockey stick" graph -- showing a sharp recent temperature rise -- that Muller once snarkily called "the poster child of the global warming community." Muller's new graph isn't just similar, it's identical.

Muller found that skeptics are wrong when they claim that a "heat island" effect from urbanization is skewing average temperature readings; monitoring instruments in rural areas show rapid warming, too. He found that skeptics are wrong to base their arguments on the fact that records from some sites seem to indicate a cooling trend, since records from at least twice as many sites clearly indicate warming. And he found that skeptics are wrong to accuse climate scientists of cherry-picking the data, since the readings that are often omitted -- because they are judged unreliable -- show the same warming trend.

Muller and his colleagues examined five times as many temperature readings as did other researchers -- a total of 1.6 billion records -- and now have put that merged database online. The results have not yet been subjected to peer review, so technically they are still preliminary. But Muller’s plain-spoken admonition that "you should not be a skeptic, at least not any longer" has reduced many deniers to incoherent grumbling or stunned silence.

Not so, I predict, with the blowhards such as Perry, Cain and Bachmann, who, out of ignorance or perceived self-interest, are willing to play politics with the Earth's future. They may concede that warming is taking place, but they call it a natural phenomenon and deny that human activity is the cause.

It is true that Muller made no attempt to ascertain "how much of the warming is due to humans." Still, the Berkeley group's work should help lead all but the dimmest policymakers to the overwhelmingly probable answer.

We know that the rise in temperatures over the past five decades is abrupt and very large. We know it is consistent with models developed by other climate researchers that posit greenhouse gas emissions -- the burning of fossil fuels by humans -- as the cause. And now we know, thanks to Muller, that those other scientists have been both careful and honorable in their work.

Nobody's fudging the numbers. Nobody's manipulating data to win research grants, as Perry claims, or making an undue fuss over a "naturally occurring" warm-up, as Bachmann alleges. Contrary to what Cain says, the science is real.

It is the know-nothing politicians -- not scientists -- who are committing an unforgivable fraud.

The Real Luddites
By David Harsanyi

Have you noticed that any person who exhibits any skepticism about global warming alarmism will, sooner or later, be called a Luddite?

“Are you a Luddite, a troglodyte? Are you a part of ‘The Planet of the Apes’ that doesn’t want science? Where would you place yourself in this argument?” newscaster and anti-simian Chris Matthews “asked” a congressman a few years back. “Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the neo-Luddites who are turning the GOP into the anti-science party should pay attention,” warned columnist Eugene Robinson in The Washington Post this week.

And so on and so forth.

The Luddites, as you all know, were a 19th-century social movement that protested, often by violent means, the encroachment of the Industrial Revolution on their lives, fearing that it would leave them without their jobs and destroy their communities.

But Luddites weren’t challenging the veracity of some scientific theory; they just weren’t crazy about the options progress offered them.

So global warming skeptics — call them anti-science if you like — are not Luddites. Luddites have an irrational fear of development in a seemingly chaotic world. This is capitalism. Today’s Luddite fears that we have too much energy, too many people, too many choices, too much bad food, too many cheap knickknacks. Today’s Luddite believes that the free movement of money and economic productivity are immoral and that if your slice is too big, someone else’s slice has to be too small.

For example, Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. recently claimed that the iPad was “responsible for eliminating thousands of jobs,” you know, just like the modern-day automated loom. What, he wonders, will happen to “all the jobs associated with paper?” Surely, a remark as deeply juvenile as that one matches anything offered by those wild-eyed skeptics.

Or take President Barack Obama, who earlier this year — and not for the first time — claimed that “structural issues with our economy” have nothing to do with politicians. The problem, in his opinion, is that “a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient,” making the workforce smaller. “You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM. You don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate.”

Those aren’t structural issues; they are productivity issues. And rather than kill jobs, efficiency drives output and growth and improves performance and the quality of goods and services — along with our lives. Perhaps if this administration weren’t busy trying to create morally pleasing but temporary and unsustainable jobs through bailouts, subsidies and “stimulus,” we could all hit that ATM more often.

Today’s Luddite also adamantly opposes a mythical institution called Wall Street, a place where a few players act illegally, some act recklessly and some team with government to undermine healthy competition. But the vast majority of companies create new technologies, services and products that make modern life possible. If they don’t, they fail.

Or at least they used to.

Luddites on the streets of Manhattan can demonize big oil, big food and big pharma all day long. They can decry profit as if Satan himself invented the notion. Yet when the multinational firm GlaxoSmithKline announces, as it did last week, that it has come up with the first effective vaccine for malaria, you can bet that it would never have happened in the system they propose. And if the vaccine is successful, the company will have done more good for the world than a million marches about the evils of capitalism could ever hope to produce.

What irks Robinson, Matthews and others like them is not that people do not accept “science,” but that they won’t accept the statist solutions tied to that science. Moreover, a Luddite opposes capitalism. A skeptic only asks questions.

You know what I'm tired of hearing? "Science has spoken." Intoned as if saying "God has spoken." Huh. Clue there, I suppose.
