I am a General Practitioner in the UK. (Probably "Family Physician" is the closest American equivalent).
The Hyperion quartet changed the way I think and feel about compassion and empathy. It should be essential reading for all/most doctors (in my opinion).
Hyperion - and the "Art of Manliness" podcast oddly enough - also both prompted me to read the writings of Ignatius Loyola. I'm glad I did.
I'm currently halfway through Ilium. I share one of the characters' (and I hope, Dan Simmons', and this forum's) "obsession with the puzzle of what it means to be human".
I have a crazy idea.
I follow a podcast, the "Art of Manliness", narrated by a sensible guy - Mr Brett McKay - who seems to share Mr Simmons' interest in Classical virtues (and Loyola): (as an aside - I believe the podcast is more a guide to modern virtue, humanity, parenting etc - to define this as "manliness" narrowly would be missing the point):
So for a while now, I've been thinking, "I really hope Dan Simmons does an AoM podcast in his lifetime". If it would bring his thinking and the great work that is Hyperion, to a wider audience, I think this would be absolutely great.
So -then I thought - I should actually get things together to suggest this. But how to proceed?
AoM / Mr McKay is not the easiest to contact online. I intend to write to him via snail mail. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
